JOSIE'S POEMS
Poems to Learn by Heart

THE YEAR'S CALENDAR
By Josie Whitehead
January’s days are short and cold,
But spring is coming we are told.
February brings the wind and snow
So grab your sledge and off we go.
March winds howl as they have fun,
But see the damage that they’ve done.
April’s teasing weather’s cool.
I think it’s playing April Fool.
May brings bluebells every year.
In woodland glades they all appear.
June’s long days are warm and bright,
With lots of day but little night.
July is here - goodbye to school!
Hello to beach and swimming pool.
August brings the sun and sea –
A lovely month for you and me.
September’s here and school again.
It’s time to wake that sleepy brain.
October's here! Our world’s turned gold.
The sun moves south - it's turning cold.
November brings the bonfires bright.
We have less day but much more night.
December’s here with Christmas cheer,
Which leads us to our brand new year.

Surely we're all tired of 'January brings the snow, makes our feet and fingers glow', etc. We had to learn this and many more poems by heart when I was a child. So much was learnt by heart then - but I thought: Why not write a couple of nice new poems for all those sweet little children to learn by heart for a change. It was enjoyed by children and their teachers and was published in 2010 by AMS Educational Ltd. I hope you like it. Now try: The Year's Cycle - just for a change of course. Josie
