THE STUPID DONKEY

(Based on an Aesop's Fable)

By Josie Whitehead

Stupid Donkey (The)

A donkey found a lion’s skin
     Complete with lion’s head.
A hunter had forgotten it
     As he’d gone on ahead.

'Aha,' the donkey slyly thought:
     'I have the perfect plan.
By wearing this I’ll frighten all,
     Just as a lion can.'

Off went the donkey down the path,

A lion to all he met.
The way he looked caused all his friends
     To worry and to fret.

Their fear of lions made them run;
     They felt full of dismay.
The donkey laughed, as donkeys do,
     With a boisterous donkey’s bray.

A braying donkey's voice is loud;
     His friends stopped in their track.

They promptly turned from where they were
       And quickly hurried back.

At once he knew his game was up.
     They'd seen through his disguise
And a stupid donkey’s what they saw
     Through their *discerning eyes.
