RHYMING IS CONTAGIOUS

By Josie Whitehead

Did you know that -

Rhyming is contagious?

Well this is what we’re told.

It quickly spreads through children

But it’s dreadful when you’re old.

It’s passed by reading poetry

Or rhymes passed from your mouth.

It travels quickly through the schools

And runs from north to south.

When I visit children’s classrooms

    And read a little rhyme,

The children catch my rhyming.

It  just takes a little time.

I feel guilty as I leave them -

When I think what I have done -

But the teachers seem quite happy

As it’s part of Key Stage One.

RHYMING GAME:  'Oh, isn't children's poetry boring when it doesn't have any rhymes or rhythm in it', said the children in my local school.  So I love writing rhyming poems for you all, but for you to be good poets when I'm not around, try a rhyming game:  In your groups (around your table), one of you starts with a word and the others have to find a rhyming word.  If you can't, then you're out.  See who the winner is.  Josie
