(A poem for National Poetry Day 2023)
(Anapaestic Metre)
By Josie Whitehead
With danger around you, out there in your world,
You are hoping to find friends and peace.
You are fleeing from savagery, malice and hate –
And seek somewhere where hatred will cease.
Maltreatment, oppression, violation and fear,
With contempt shown for creed or for race:
With panic and dread burning deep in your heart,
You want to escape from this place.
Shut the door on bombardment. Move quickly away
To a safe place to lay your poor head.
You seek refuge from danger, from evil and fear,
And need somewhere where love thrives, instead.
You want friendship and love in our God-given world
And some safety and peace – that’s for sure.
Well we hope you’ll find refuge in this world we share,
For who in this world could want more?
