PLAYING WITH WORDS
IS A GREAT DEAL OF FUN

By Josie Whitehead

Playing With Words is . . .

Hello dear children:   Now rule number one:

Playing with words is a great deal of fun.

Rhyming and rhythm  creeps under your skin:

Oh, open your mind now and let them fly in.

Similes?   Metaphors?  Grab some of those:

Oh don’t try to eat them - they’re sour I suppose.

They’re meant to enhance your poems, you see.

Was that rule number two or rule number three?

Alliteration? Come now:  Well, let me just see:

'An ape ate my aunty,' - rule number three.

Personification?   When words want to play -

And so will your poem by the end of this day.

Alliteration:  When each word starts with the same letter.

Personification:  When you describe something with a human quality.  Isn't it CHILDREN that want to play?
