THE NINCUMPUZE

By Josie Whitehead

Nincumpuze (The)

Have you met the Nincumpuze?

They wear strange hats and pointed shoes.

     They live upon a mountainside

And watch the eagles as they glide.

Their dwarf-like faces may seem weird,

With crinkly skin and long white beards,

But Nincumpuze say we’re strange too.

Compared to them, it’s surely true.

From high up on their mountain peak

Their lives are hard; their weather's bleak.

They mainly live in ice and snow.

So what food do you think they grow?

Well, deep beneath the snow you’ll find

Some things not known by humankind:

     Delicious fruit and scrumptious cakes;

Some tasty things for sweet milk shakes.

What type of work do these folk do?

Oh, I wish that I could say I knew,

But they’ll not talk to you or me,

For Nincumpuze are shy you see.
