MY NAME AND YOUR NAME

By Josie Whitehead

Your parents chose the name you have

         Before you even knew.

They liked the name they chose for you,

          But ask yourself: ‘Do you?’

    Perhaps they called you: ‘Whats-a-name’

           Or Dinky Danky Doo?

They liked the name they chose for you

           But ask yourself: ‘Do you?’

The name you see above is mine –

Well, that is what you think,

But if you saw me now – oh yes,

               Perhaps you’d see me wink . . .

For my parents chose a longer name

And surprise, surprise, surprise - -

They found that name was long to say

So they cut it down in size.

Hands up who’s name’s been cut in size.

What are you called by friends?

My ‘Josephine’ is ‘Josie’ now –

And it’s here my poem must end.
