I'LL BE AN ANGEL INSTEAD

By Josie Whitehead

I'll Be An Angel Instead

‘Twas the month before Christmas

     When our teacher said:
'Now I need volunteers,' -

And her words caused us dread.

'The Nativity Play’s coming,

And you’ll all take a part.
Come on now, show willing.

I want none faint of heart.'

‘Twas the month before Christmas

      When she asked us again,
But we’d done it before

     And remembered the strain.

‘Twas three weeks before Christmas

      And still no volunteers,
So I was chosen as Mary,

     And this caused me tears.

Mum said: 'Oh come come now!

There’s not much to do -
So, stop all that crying

      And don’t feel so blue.'

I remembered Mum’s words though,

     Which surely were true:
'It’s a hard life as a mother,

     With kids just like you!'

Some babies, you know,

     Can play up and annoy,
And ask me to be Mum

      To a small baby boy?

                   - - - (Oh, no no no)

So next day in the class

     I put up my hand:
'I’ll be an angel instead,'

     Well you’ll understand!
