Fire

Snapping, crackling, sparkling and spluttering;
The bonfires are blazing, hissing and muttering.
     Spitting, sparking, gleaming and dancing;
     Flames like wild horses, eagerly prancing.

Flames that are roaring, curling and swirling;
Flashing, flickering, frantically whirling.
    Fires which attack, fires which defend;
    The dangerous killer but also man’s friend.

Fires that cook food for human consumption;
Fires that seem proud and full of presumption;
   Fires which bring warmth, comfort and light.
   My fire and your fire burns brightly tonight.

How can fires 'defend'?    I'm thinking of the bitterly cold weather which can kill you.  A warm fire can defend people and animals from freezing to death.  When I was a child, without central heating, our warm fire defended me for certain, and so did my hot water bottle in my bed.  Josie
