CHILDREN'S CHOICE

By Josie Whitehead

Children's Choice

What sorts of foods do children like?

Well, ask them and you’ll see.

They may not be what adults like –

Well the oldies just like me.

Good healthy foods, that adults like,

To children may seem *iffy –

But try some favourites that they love

And they'll vanish in a jiffy.

A peanut/jelly sandwich? - Oh!

      Some adults find this 'icky,

They prefer a cheesy pizza, though

      For adults are so *picky.

A hamburger? Oh, yes, yes, yes.

And with veggies they’re a treat.

A turkey-burger’s good, as well,

And less fattening than red meat.

Is chicken noodle soup your choice –

     In winter, when it's cold?

I think you’ll find we all like this –

     Both children and we old.

Now get in groups and make a list

Of foods that you like best,

And after all you’ve thought about

      I’m sure you’ll need a rest.

* Iffy - (Collins Dictionary) - If you say that something is 'iffy', you mean that it is not very good in some way.  Healthy foods are good, of course, but not always 'preferred' by children, until they realize their real value in terms of how good they are for their health I'm afraid.

* icky:  unpleasant or disgusting.

* picky: fussy and hard to please.  (Oh surely not!!!! - Josie)

Note: A peanut butter and jelly sandwich (PB&J) consists of peanut butter and fruit preserves—jelly—spread on bread. The sandwich may be open-faced, made of a single slice of bread folded over, or made using two slices of bread.
