THE BRAND NEW YEAR

By Josie Whitehead

Brand New Year (The)

Goodbye old year once again.

Let’s welcome next year with champagne.

      Bright fireworks light the heavens above

       And we reply with cheers and love.

Each new year starts with faith and hope

And the yearly message from the pope,

     For most want happiness and peace –

     And hope that hate and warring cease.

We wish for friendship, love, concord;

Then face the future, hopes ignored,

     For some step forth with cruel intent

     To kill, to wound and to torment.

Then as the fireworks touch the sky

And we wish the old year goodbye,

      We sally forth with hope and fear

       To start again a brand new year.
