BELLING THE CAT
Based on an Aesop's Fable
By Josie Whitehead
Once there was a *wily cat –
Worse than all the rest –
But, when it came to catching mice,
He surely was the best.
The little mice were terrified
And discussed the subject well,
And one mouse had a bright idea:
‘Let’s get that cat a bell.’

‘We’d surely hear when he’s about,
Of that there is no doubt.’
His friend said: ‘I’ll go to the shops
When pussy’s not about.’

The eldest mouse had heard all this
And hadn't said a word,
But he quietly added his advice:
‘Your plan is quite absurd.'

‘What you need to think about
Is just who'll ‘bell’ that cat?
It’s no good making all your plans
If you haven’t thought of that!’

* Wily: especially deceitful

Moral: Make sure you think your plans through thoroughly before jumping into doing something.
